About the Area

What a Session Looks Like in Markham, from Its Heritage Districts to Cornell

Markham has 62,060 residents aged 65 and older (Statistics Canada, 2021 Census). It is also a city of full houses, with 10,515 households home to three generations or more, so the person arranging sessions often lives down the hall rather than calling from another city. Three of the areas below began as villages and are now heritage districts, and the fourth, Cornell, was planned from the ground up in the 1990s. The houses in each are different enough to change where we set up and what we bring.

Thornhill

Thornhill is one of Markham's four heritage districts, and the older houses around its historic core tend to come with steps up to the front door, a staircase between the kitchen and the bedroom, and bathrooms that were never sized for a walker. None of that rules out training at home. On the first visit we look at the entry, the stairs and the room you have, and build the session around the house you live in.

Looking for a program nearby? The Thornhill Village library is at 10 Colborne Street, in a house built in 1851. Thornhill Community Centre at 7755 Bayview Avenue has a seniors centre. If you are working back from a hip or a knee, the City lists its therapy pool at 35 degrees, with hand railing right around the pool and deck and a ramp into the water.

For a walk, Pomona Mills Park is about fifteen minutes on foot from the Thornhill Village library, and its loop of roughly two kilometres is mostly paved. German Mills Settlers Park at 80 German Mills Road mixes paved path with gravel and dirt, so save it for when your footing is steady and start with Pomona Mills.

Unionville

Unionville has two very different kinds of home within a few streets. Main Street is another of Markham's heritage districts, and the older houses on and around it tend to have tight rooms and steep stairs. Around it sits a cluster of purpose-built seniors housing: Amica, also on Main Street, Bethany Lodge and Bethany Manor on Second Street, and the Unionville Home Society campus on Highway 7. In those buildings the room is smaller and there is usually a front desk. When you book, let us know whether we sign in at the desk or you meet us in the lobby, and the first visit starts on time.

Looking for a program nearby? The Unionville library and the Old Unionville Library Community Centre sit side by side at 15 Library Lane, just off Main Street. Check the community centre before you set out, because the City lists it as open only to pre-booked or registered groups, with no front desk.

For a walk, Toogood Pond is the one to know, about ten minutes on foot from the Unionville library. The loop around the pond is short and close to flat, and the City lists washrooms at the park. Part of the path is gravel, so if you use a walker or a rollator, keep to the paved sections.

Markham Village

Markham Village is the heritage district that shares the city's name, and along Main Street the older houses come with the stairs you would expect. Away from Main Street you are into housing built after 1960, which is almost all of Markham, and the question that matters most is whether the bedroom is upstairs. Both work. One floor or two decides where the session happens, and we settle that on the first visit.

Looking for a program nearby? The Markham Seniors Activity Centre at 22 Water Street is one of Ontario's designated Seniors Active Living Centres. The Markham Village library is at 6031 Highway 7, next door to the Markham Village Community Centre.

For a walk, Milne Dam Conservation Park at 8135 McCowan Road has one of the longest paved path networks in Markham, and the City lists washrooms there. Morgan Park at 11 Parkway Avenue is one of the few parks where the City lists public washrooms, and its pickleball courts make a good goal to build towards.

Cornell

Cornell was planned in the 1990s around front porches and garages on rear lanes, with townhouses mixed in among the detached homes. The door you use every day may be at the back, off the lane, and in a townhouse the kitchen and the bedroom are often on different floors, so tell us which door to come to when you book. If you are coming home from an operation at Markham Stouffville Hospital, right beside Cornell, we work on both sides of it: before, to build strength for the recovery, and after, to keep working at home once formal rehabilitation ends.

Looking for a program nearby? Cornell Community Centre is at 3201 Bur Oak Avenue, along the east edge of the hospital. It has a room set aside for older adults, a therapy pool among its three pool areas, and a multi-sensory room the City describes as being for people with autism, a developmental disability, dementia or a brain injury.

For a walk after an operation, start at Cornell Community Park, 371 Cornell Centre Boulevard. Its paths are paved throughout and the City lists public washrooms there, so you can build distance a lap at a time.

Our kinesiologists travel across Markham, and you see the same one every visit. York Region Public Health's fall prevention advice for older adults says exercise is the most effective intervention to reduce the risk of falls. At HomeStretch we bring in-home kinesiology into your living room and build the plan around your house and your household, so you can stay independent at home. That suits a family where everyone works through the week, and anyone who would rather have a kinesiologist's full attention than a place in a class. What an in-home kinesiology session involves.

Common Questions

FAQs for Markham

Everything you need to know before getting started.

Do you provide in-home personal training for seniors in Markham?

Yes. Registered kinesiologists travel to clients across Markham, including Thornhill, Unionville, Markham Village, Cornell, Berczy and Angus Glen. Sessions run one to one in your own home, so there is no travel, no gym and no equipment to buy.

What is the difference between a kinesiologist and a personal trainer?

A kinesiologist holds a university degree in human movement, and in Ontario kinesiologists are registered with the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario. The training covers working with medical histories, joint replacements, arthritis and post-surgical recovery. For an older adult the goal is safe progress around real health conditions rather than general fitness.

Can seniors with limited mobility still train at home?

Yes. Programs are built for any mobility level, from clients using a walker to clients who still run, and we work with anyone over 55. The assessment sets the starting point, and the plan is built for the space you have, whether that is a suite in a seniors residence, a room in a house shared by three generations, or a bungalow with a living room to clear.

What senior fitness programs are available in Markham?

We work one to one in your home across Markham, and every plan comes from an assessment rather than a set routine. Most plans focus on balance and fall prevention, strength and mobility for arthritis and joint replacements, or pre- and post-operative rehabilitation. We also run Brain and Balance, a six-week small-group program that pairs balance work with cognitive exercises, and workshops for retirement residences and community groups. Ask what is running near you when you book your consultation.

Can you help with rehabilitation at home after surgery?

Yes. Pre- and post-operative rehabilitation is a core service, most often for hip, knee and shoulder procedures. Sessions follow the guidance of your surgeon or physiotherapist and continue at home once formal rehabilitation ends, which is usually the point where progress stalls. If your operation is at Markham Stouffville Hospital, sessions can start at home as soon as your care team clears you to exercise.

How do I get started, and is it covered by benefits?

Book a free phone consultation. We talk through your health history, goals and any concerns, and explain how in-home training works and what it costs, with no commitment. If it is a good fit, a kinesiologist visits your home for an initial assessment of balance, strength and fall risk and builds your plan. No equipment is needed. Many extended health benefit plans cover kinesiology services, so we recommend checking with your provider. We are happy to provide receipts and session documentation to support a claim.
