Seniors Lunch & Learn in Hamilton
Fall Prevention, Community & Confidence at the Hamilton Italian Centre
If you live in Hamilton, Ontario and you’re thinking about how to stay strong, steady, and independent as you age, this is for you.
I’m Melissa, a Registered Kinesiologist and founder of HomeStretch Active Living. Many people online know me as The Fall Prevention Coach from my viral TikToks but my real passion is working face-to-face with older adults right here in our communities.
I’m proud to share that HomeStretch has officially partnered with the Hamilton Italian Centre, located at 420 Crerar Drive, Hamilton, Ontario, to offer a brand-new 6-week Fall Prevention Lunch & Learn series for seniors.
This isn’t just another exercise class.
It’s education, movement, connection and a beautiful Italian home-cooked lunch to follow.
Why the Hamilton Italian Centre?
The Hamilton Italian Centre, connected to the Sons and Daughters of Italy community, has long been a hub for cultural events, social gatherings, and community programming in Hamilton. Their newest facility on Crerar Drive is expanding its vision and President Robert Skaljin is passionate about building a long-term adult day program that supports older adults physically, socially, and mentally.
When Robert and I connected, we both saw the same need:
Hamilton seniors want to stay independent but they need the right tools, education, and environment to do it safely.
This partnership is the beginning of something long-term for the Hamilton community.
What Is the Seniors Lunch & Learn?
Our Seniors Lunch & Learn Launch Event with HomeStretch introduces a 6-week fall prevention workshop series designed specifically for older adults in Hamilton.
Each week covers a different pillar of fall prevention:
6-Week Fall Prevention Curriculum
Week 1: Fall Prevention 101
Understand why falls happen and what you can do about them.
Week 2: Balance + Posture
Improve stability and alignment for safer walking.
Week 3: Core Strength + Coordination
Build strength where it matters most for staying upright.
Week 4: Brain Health + Balance
Train reaction time and dual-task ability.
Week 5: Foot Strength, Grip + Power
Address the small muscles that make a big difference.
Week 6: Agility + Reaction Time
Learn how to react quickly if you trip before a fall happens.
This is evidence-based kinesiology, designed specifically for seniors.
Why Fall Prevention Matters in Hamilton
Falls are the #1 cause of injury-related hospital visits for older adults in Ontario.
In communities like:
Hamilton Mountain
Stoney Creek
Ancaster
Dundas
East Mountain
Near Upper James Street and Limeridge Mall
Many seniors are living independently at home. That independence is worth protecting. Fall prevention isn’t about fear. It’s about proactive strength.
The Power of Social Connection in Aging
One of the most overlooked risk factors for decline isn’t physical. It’s loneliness.
Research consistently shows that social isolation increases risk for:
Cognitive decline
Depression
Reduced mobility
Hospitalization
When learning happens in a group setting especially one that includes shared meals and conversation, people retain more information and are more likely to apply it.
When education is:
Engaging
Interactive
Physically active
Social
You don’t just hear it. You live it.
That’s why our Lunch & Learn format works so well.
You learn.
You move.
You connect.
You eat together.
Why I Built This in Hamilton
Over the years, I’ve worked with hundreds of older adults across Ontario. I’ve seen what happens after a fall.
I’ve also seen what happens when someone trains before a fall:
Confidence returns
Movement improves
Fear decreases
When I met the leadership at the Hamilton Italian Centre and saw their vision for adult programming, I knew this was the right place to build something sustainable.
This isn’t a one-off event. This is the beginning of consistent fall prevention education in Hamilton.
