The Core Message for Our Readers: Movement as Confidence
Melissa shared how Home Stretch began through her first-hand experience supporting older adults in regaining confidence after surgery and mobility challenges. She emphasized that fall prevention is about more than avoiding risk — it’s about learning how to move safely and trust your body again.
“It’s hard to stay consistent — even for me — but that’s the key. Movement has to feel safe and enjoyable so it becomes something you want to do every day.” — Melissa Gunstone
This insight set the tone for the session: building resiliency means making movement approachable, repeatable, and rewarding
Microdosing Movement and Movement Snacking
Small Steps, Big Impact
Throughout the discussion, participants explored how micro-dosing movement — or taking short, frequent activity breaks — can dramatically improve long-term mobility.
Movement scientist John Sinclair of Seven Movements described how these small movement “snacks” accumulate into measurable benefits, supporting strength, coordination, and reaction time without overwhelming the body.
Melissa echoed this in her own work with clients across Canada: integrating just seven minutes of daily guided movement can re-establish the brain–body connection, boost confidence, and make exercise more accessible for those with arthritis, stiffness, or fear of falling.
The Brain–Body Connection
Melissa spoke passionately about how the brain and body must work together to create confidence in motion.
“When my brain feels safe doing just a few minutes of guided movement, I’m confident doing it again — it becomes familiar instead of scary.” — Melissa Gunstone
This is the philosophy that shapes Home Stretch’s approach: repetition builds safety, safety builds confidence, and confidence leads to independence.
The webinar also covered how practicing balance and controlled reaction time prepares older adults for real-world scenarios — helping prevent injuries while restoring freedom in daily life.
Empowering Communities
Falls remain one of the leading causes of injury among older adults across Canada. Home Stretch continues to expand its programs kinesiologist-led programs in home and in workshops throughout Norfolk County, Hamilton, Greater Toronto Area and the Niagara Region, offering:
In-home kinesiology sessions
Group classes in community centres and retirement residences
Specialized fall prevention and balance programs
These locally accessible services ensure that older adults across Ontario can build confidence without needing a gym or specialized equipment.
Key Takeaways from the Webinar
1. Movement doesn’t have to be long — it has to be consistent.
Micro-dosed, low-barrier movement helps build strength and confidence in short, manageable sessions.
2. Confidence is built through familiarity.
When movement feels safe and enjoyable, it becomes part of everyday life.
3. Fall prevention starts with awareness.
Learning how to react, recover, and move with control is as important as building strength.
4. Local support makes all the difference.
Community-based kinesiology programs provide accountability, education, and encouragement to stay active longer.
Partners in Wellness
This event was made possible in collaboration with:
Seven Movements – Dan Tatton & John Sinclair creators of evidence-based, accessible exercise programs for all ages
Sturdy – Melissa Gunstone’s brand designed to help people train reaction time and coordination safely at home
Together, these organizations share a vision of helping Canadians move more often, with confidence and care.
Keeping the Momentum
The Fall Resiliency Webinar showcased how science, education, and compassion come together to support active aging.
Melissa summed it up best:
“Avoiding the floor doesn’t keep you safe - it limits your confidence. When you practice movement safely, you build trust in your body again.” - Melissa Gunstone
Every small movement matters. With consistency, confidence, and the right support, aging adults can stay stronger, steadier, and more independent - one movement at a time.
